Kahili Na'i

Mahalo to Ka Laua'e Foundation for hosting the 13th E Pili Kakou at the Kaua'i Beach Resort (February 18-20, 2011) and for consistently bringing together a wealth of kumu hula for us to learn from! I had the opportunity to take a wonderful lei hulu (feather) workshop from Mele Kahalepuna, daughter of Aunty Paulette Kahalepuna and granddaughter of Aunty Mary Lou Kekuewa. Knowing that the delicate art of feather lei making goes back centuries and to be able to learn how to make kahili from a feather lei maker who comes from a long line of kumu hulu was an incredible gift! With extreme patience, even the most novice student can create something beautiful! Not only did we each make our own kahili, but Mele shared a hula taught to her by Blaine Kia for us to exhibit our new prize at the evening ho'ike. What a BONUS! It made the experience even more memorable and so proud that we could accomplish all of this in 2 hours! Just goes to show that a great teacher can bring out the best in her students! Mahalo to Mele and Uncle Herman too!

Mahalo to you for taking care of your Tutu so your mom could come to Kaua'i!  We were classmates at Kamehameha so it was even more special to learn from her! Praying your Tutu will be better soon and that all 3 of you can come next year! Na Iesu 'oukou e malama mai! *:)
