It's actually not necessary for newborns to be bathed immediately, it is actually harmful to their skin. That is why they are born with a protective coating (vernix) on their skin, It should be left on as long as possible and gently wiped off with warm water and soft cloth, not soap.

Thanks for the info. That's exactly what happened here, except the blood was washed from the hair with soap.
