The thermal camera installed at MVO in January 2009 is showing its usefulness. It has already recorded three small flows on the north side of the dome and one on the west (Gages) side.
The latest images are from the pyroclastic flow at approximately 3:30 pm on Wednesday 25 February 2009. This flow started near the top of the dome and travelled down into Tyer's Ghaut. The thermal images are striking in that they also show the helicopter used by MVO. The helicopter had just landed when this flow occurred.

The movie is playing at approximately 20 times real time. Times are given in UTC/GMT, which is four hours ahead of Montserrat time.

The thermal monitoring equipment was developed and supported by Laboratorio di Geofisica, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Firenze, Italy.
