today day October 19th 2011. I read the story of Empire on BBC.com..I then went to google earth and viewed the town...what a nice small town..it looked all american. Asafe place to raise a family .What a shame this had to happen to anyone...
Great video super ride...

Thanks for sharing. Sad Empire is no longer on the map so to speak. I worked for USG here in Iowa for 16 years until they closed our 2nd wallboard plant in 2008. It hurt losing my job, but this is much bigger. They did the same thing with our plant, put up a fence and said they are "idling" it so as to save money on taxes. Saddens me to see a whole town be put to rest, God bless the families that got ousted.

Every since hearing about the Black Rock Desert and Pyramid Lake back in the late 1990s, I've wanted to go. I finally got my chance back in October of 2009, and wasn't disappointed. I loved every moment of the drive from Vegas thru Tonopah to Reno and beyond, and then straight across Nevada's central Beltline - Route 50. Made a video of it, too. Thanks for posting this. RIP Empire...

Hyper,
Thank you so very much for this great vid. I am a 53 year old man whose fondest memories of life are when I was in Nevada. Spent most of time in the Reno area and boy do I sure miss it. Try to explain to wife and daughter but they just don't understand. This just makes it all come alive again. Great vid and excellent narration.

Rumours of the complete demise of Empire might be premature, since gypsum follows the fortunes of building of houses. As the economy recovers, there may be a need for gypsum locally again.
Nice footage, not too much author intrusion. Great sound effects when you sped up the action. I had forgotten how cold it can get in the desert out that way.
GOD....Nevada is beautiful!! I can't wait to live there!

@xForTheRepublic It's a bit hard sometimes to see the beauty of countryside you're not familiar with, but once you feel the dry wind, smell the sage, and see the variations of the minerals and soils here in Nevada--I agree, it's beautiful.

@1126831 I appreciate the kind words. Nevada landscape is unigue, and once you've experienced it in it's many glories you'll have that memory to play over and over.
