Good point, Richard. Regarding race though, Kentucky is an exception to the rule. Throughout the U.S. the death penalty is applied more to African-American defendants and when the victim is white.
Yes, there are some horrible people on death row. But rather than risk executing an innocent person--and 122 innocent people on death row have been later exonerated--why not sentence them to live without parole in a Supermax?
