Alan's Electronic Projects Stair Lighting Controller. This LED lighting controller has an invisible IR (infrared) beam at the top and bottom of the stairs. When the beam is broken the lights are turned on as you walk up or down the stairs. After a delay the lights are also turned off following you. This install was done with custom blue 5mm LEDs, the typical LED lights are 10mm white.

This system will operate all the time (light or dark). If you need a system that can be set to only operate in the dark have a look at the Reactive Lighting model 2000 stair lighting controller.
