This is the true story of the famous Sophie Tucker who was known as the "Last Of The Red Hot Mamas." Many referred to her as the female Al Jolson. Popular on stage and screen, she also appeared on many TV shows including the Ed Sullivan Show in the 50-60s. Her recordings are still popular today even though she has been gone for many years. It was a pleasure to have made this video.

Very nice. I enjoyed this a lot and am one of the Jolson forum gang. I noticed on the head stone the name Sophie ABUZA Tucker. I had read that the family had changed its name from Kalish to that. Do you happen to know why? It seems an unusual change to make.

Names were changed quite often, due to military conscription. The Russian army allowed one son to remain at home from one family. However, the second, or subsequent sons had to serve unless they did the following: Go and live with another family and adopt the new family name. Thus, it is possible that Sophie's father, family name ABRUZA, changed his name to KALLISH, another family. When they were safe in USA, he changed it back to the real name, ABRUZA.
