They placed the book there right before the shot and it fell shortly after. As you can see, the book behind it had a cover that was curved slightly outward, perhaps folded at one point. This exerted pressure and slowly pushed the book off the shelf in a symbolic display of the "spiritual" book's ineptitude.

Actually, you could plan this shot if you tried. In fact you wouldn't have to try very hard--just attach a length of thin thread or fishing line to the book and pull it gently when you want the book to fall.
But I suppose it's more likely that a spirit from another world decided to suggest--albeit in a subtle manner sure to cause doubt--its existence on a BBC documentary by Richard Dawkins.

Rational explanation: the book was placed there a minute before the shot because it was pertinent to the point being made. Then it fell.
