Standard and slack key tunings used to play this really great song by Uncle David Heaukulani about the old days raising cattle on the Big Island.
English Translation:
Famous is Waimea,
much beloved.
Thecattle asleep,
we relax at ease.

The melodious music,
nighttime guitars.
The cattle asleep,
we relax at ease.

Vaquero come back,
cherished memory.

Vaquero come back,
cherished memory.

The guitar sings,
exhausted horses.
The cattle asleep,
we relax at ease.

The story then,
is told.
The cattle asleep,
we relax at ease.

Vaquero come back,
cherished memory.

Vaquero come back,
cherished memory.

the song is copyright 2007 by Dr. David Heaukulani

  • Aloha, David Heaukulani is a good friend of mine. I lived around the corner from David, when I was living in Hawaii, now I'm in Atlanta, GA. Last time I seen David was at our McKinley Class Reunion in Vegas about 2 - 3 years ago. Oh, I take that back, he came to my birthday party at Waimea, my nephew's place, when I visited the Big Island last year. Uncle, Wally

  • @wallychoi1 Thanks so much for the comment: Just as a point in reference, I want to mention that Mr. Choi and his Royal Drifters were cutting records when I dropped outta my mother's womb in 1959 and he's still playing and singing! I bought Dr. Heaukulani's slack key ukulele book and have really enjoyed it and also his and your videos here. Thanks Uncle Wally for sharing your great talent with your videos.

  • Your voice goes well with this type of music. Very relaxing.

  • @janeczka WOW!! I haven't heard for you in a long time. Thanks for commenting and nice to see you around again. Aloha!

  • Although I am not an ethnomusicologist... For my ears this sounds very authentically. Interesting tuning lesson as well... (I will try this, too) Thanks for sharing!

  • @DermitderUkulele thanks for the comments. I hope you enjoy the open tuning ...it's a wonderful way to make music.
