It's 11:30 in the morning and I am currently eating cake for breakfast while writing this.
Many people have been asking me what I did to lose 65 pounds and how long it took me. First of all, I want you to understand that it took me three years to lose the weight; it didn't just fall off of me. It took determination, motivation, and patience. I also don't call any of what I did to lose weight a diet. It was a lifestyle change.
My journey began in 2007 when my mom decided to sign up for Weight Watchers and asked if I would like to go with her. We went to one meeting every week for six months, and then I stopped going to the meetings but continued doing what they suggested, which is this;
Pay attention to what you stomach is telling you, especially while you are eating. It's important to stop as soon as you start to feel full. It is equally important to eat a snack if you feel hungry two or three hours later. With me, I found that I was eating smaller meals every four hours or so. I also stop eating three hours before I go to bed, however having a healthy snack before bed is also good.
The most important part of my lifestyle change is that I don't deprive myself of anything. I still eat junk food, I still drink regular pop, I still eat out at restaurants and order whatever I want. It's all about portion control and making healthier choices (if you feel like it). I started getting salads instead of fries, however I'd choose fries every not and again simply because I like them. I also started drinking lots more water, which meant I was drinking less pop. Also, don't be hard on yourself. If you have a day where you just binge eat or eat a ton of junk food, then own up to it and don't beat yourself up about it. Trust me, I had quite a few of these days... in fact I had a whole month worth of days like this and ever gained seven pounds, but I got myself right back on track. Speaking of days like this, today (May 25th 2011) I am definitely having one of those days and I am perfectly okay with that. I ate chips for breakfast and now I'm eating cake, but I own up to it and I am going to the gym later this afternoon.
Lastly, I didn't start going to the gym until October 2010 which is why it took me longer to lose the weight. However, I did walk a lot and last year I started hiking a pretty intense mountain (which takes two hours total to complete) once a month, but that's it. Unfortunately, not everyone's body works this way and I do suggest that if you can make time to go to the gym or fit in a regular work out, to do it. You'll have better results and quicker... not instantly, but maybe 6 months faster than me. I try to go to the gym 3-5 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. I have days where I only do cardio (the elliptical trainer is my best friend) and days where I go with my boyfriend and we motivate each other on the weight lifting machines. It's important to stretch before (and sometimes after, especially if it's been awhile since being active) and don't beat yourself up. Do the best that you can do, create a goal before you start and motivate yourself to stick to that goal. It's all about motivating yourself and finding ways to stay motivated. The one thing that works really well for me is having a good workout playlist to listen to.
Anyways, that's pretty much it. If you have any questions please feel free to leave a comment or send me a private message and I'll get back to you.
