Still staying with Greece in the year 480 B.C., we move to the straits between mainland Greece and the Island of Salamis, where Xerxes, still stinging from his hard victory at Thermopylae, is ready to rush his navy past an outnumbered Greek fleet blocking the way to Athens. Because the Straits of Salamis are small and cramped, the numerical superiority of the Persian fleet became a hindrance, and the Greeks were able to outmaneuver them decisively and destroyed or captured some 200 Persian ships. Xerxes was forced to retreat to Asia with the remainder of his demoralized army.
