March 10th marked the 50th anniversary of Tibetan Uprising Day, when the Chinese stormed into Lhasa and the people rose up to protect their precious leader the Dalai Lama. As results 10s of thousands of Tibetan men, women and children were slaughtered. Since that time it is estimated nearly 2 million Tibetan people (Tibet had a population of only 6 million) have perished. 6000 institutions of higher learning were destroyed. Monks and nuns were slaughtered. Children were forced to shoot their parents. The Tibetan language was outlawed. Tibetan people have become criminals in their own homeland. They are economically marginalized. It is estimated there are 7 Chinese to every one Tibetan in Lhasa. Nomads are forced into indentured government housing and servitude. Rape, abortion and forced sterilization continues to be waged against Tibetan women as we speak.
On March 9-10th, we joined our Tibetan brothers and sisters around the planet to commemorate this sad occasion and stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters living inside of Tibet who continue to face unimaginable crimes against humanity.
The events commenced in Berkeley March 9th, to recall the people slaughtered within the last year by Chinese forces in Tibet. We then marched in Berkeley in candlelight procession. The following morning March 10, the Tibetan flag was raised at Berkeley City Hall. The procession then moved onto San Francisco with a rally at City Hall. We then walked in procession up to Lombard St to the Chinese Consulate.
There were perhaps 500 Tibetans in the procession with maybe 50 western (Inge) people, of which Tibetech and Sierra Friends of Tibet were about 20 of those 50 inge people.
Location: San Francisco, Chinese Consulate, City Hall, Union Square, Berkeley
