This video is a demonstration of the JAE 50 Extension Cable which I developed for hobbyist use in carputers and other modding projects. The cable allows one to disassociate devices (typically the "Slim Line" optical drives) from their motherboards.

The JAE 50 Cable is available for purchase at http://paul.thejennis.com/JAE50/About.html for $45 to $60 + shipping. Yes, I'm aware that it's expensive but:

A) This project has been very expensive and time-consuming for me and even at $60/unit, I will not recover the development costs for a very long time. I've personally invested my non-existent money for the benefit of the modding community, so I think $45 - $60 per unit is very reasonable.

B) This cable is one-of-a-kind! You will not find it anywhere else! Economics alone will tell you that the value of this cable is high!

Thanks for your interest! Please feel free to ask questions below or shoot me an e-mail.

  • There are adapters that can be had for $4 shipped that convert JAE-50 to SATA or IDE. Much simpler solution. I'm happy for your development and findings, but I just wanted to let people know there are more options.

The adapters are essentialy PCBs that you plug into the laptop drive and provide a floppy power cable and SATA or IDE cable. Search for laptop to sata or the like.

  • True, but those adapters will only convert female JAE to male IDE. Try finding one that will do the opposite. ;)

In a carputer built from a laptop which only has a surface mount JAE port for its optical device, your choices are very limited.

    Thanks for your comments!

  • @CliveAtFive I have one that plugs into laptop optical drives and converts it to standard SATA. Your options with a laptop are absolutely not limited. You have Expresscard or Cardbus, SATA, firewire and of course USB.

What I'm tell you is yes this was a completely ridiculously retarded waste of 5000$, 500$ in production costs or 50$ for a single cable. There are laptop motherboards with 2 sata ports and Esata for 50$. Wow, just wow, what a waste.

  • @crackmontage - lol. This video AND PRODUCT were made 3 YEARS AGO when SATA had *just started* being used in laptops. It was even longer before SATA became the norm! And that's just new laptops. People work on their legacy crap all the time. Besides, it's not like I'm still producing them! That would be foolish. But for you to come here and comment what you did is about as helpful as finding some ancient Gopher bboard, and chastising their use of the Parallel Port. Seek help.

  • How about eSATA to USB? Or IDE to USB. Piggyback the adapters.

  • Reply sent.

  • Yeah, you're right but I don't think I'll be able to sell another 100 cables. SATA is coming in full-force... JAE 50 is a dying interface.

It's my pleasure to help the modding community!

  • For future orders, at least you'll only have to pay for the parts (since all the initial designing and such is already completed), right?

Thanks for your efforts in being a true modder and willing to go through all that to help the rest of us.

  • Sales have been okay. I have about 15 of the 12" left and 45 of the 24" left. I probably won't buy any more. TOO DAMN STRESSFUL!

There was no minimum, but it's only economical to buy in lots of 100 or more... otherwise............ yikes. There was a design fee of $1000. plus creating the templates for the flex cable mold wasn't cheap either. $400-ish. Your results may vary, of course.

  • But hey, you got what you wanted! You're my hero, I'm going to see if I can scrounge up some money and buy one. How have these been selling? Was there a minimum to purchase (price or quantity-wise)? Did they charge anything to "design/develop" the connector or was that all included in the price?
