I wrote this poem on July 4, 1987. It was a little less than 2 months before my 19th birthday. I was sitting in a field back stage of a Dr. Hook concert just after Ray Sawyer, the lead singer had kissed me.
I was full of naivety and hopeful for the world.
I always liked this poem and have always wanted to share it. Now is my chance. I hope you enjoy the wistful romantic thoughts of an 18 year old young woman.

Fossil In Time
Open is my mind to the voices that engulf me,
The voice of the wind, the voice of the trees, the voice of the sea.
While wind whispers in my ear and caresses my skin,
Trees, the prairie grass, conversation begins.
The sea becomes a hushed silence of fear.
Atop the sea a rush sets in, it is the voice of the wind.
It's calling, it's screaming, "Release me I beg!"
For there is no way out to the water's edge.
Far and wide, vast is the sea,
Open is my mind to the voices that engulf me.
Deep is my sight to the visions that abound me,
There are the hills, and the sky, and all that is free.
While the hills state their presence, the clouds journey on,
Endlessly changing what once belonged.
Forever deep, strong stands the forest.
Beautiful life is apparent to me,
When all that I know is fear of the sea.
At the edge of the earth I am small as I stand,
Engrossed by the power of this breath taking land.
