This was the final project for my Motion Media Design Techniques 1 class. We had to take a quote or song lyrics and present it without its narration. I chose one of my favorite quotes by Wassily Kandinsky: "Color is the key. The eye is the hammer. The soul is the piano with its many chords. The artist is the hand that, by touching this or that key, sets the soul vibrating automatically." I've recently fell in love with visual music and this quote sums up the synaesthetic effect that abstract art can create. My piece moves through with a feeling of history from painting, to film, to digital video, while focusing on the many opposing elements in visual music as a whole. I tried to convey a sense of contrast between traditional and experimental art, subtractive and additive color, halftone printing and pixels, analog and digital, film and video, paint and data, pigment and light. The song I used, "Phantom" by Benza Maman, has a beautiful contrast throughout it that is truly essential to my piece, and inspired much of my visuals, like any other work of visual music.
