www.cigna.com | CIGNA Initiatives | Rising obesity rates and poor health practices threaten our communities. The CIGNA Health Awareness Tour Mobile Learning Lab helps people understand how our choices can affect our health and what they can change.

While extra weight is a very visual part of the equation, there are more factors that don't traditionally come to mind when considering health, such as the locations of supermarkets and the layouts of towns. Thinking about health differently is critical to ensure that our country focuses resources on keeping people well, rather than simply caring for those who are sick.

The CIGNA Mobile Learning Lab is an interactive exhibit aboard an 18-wheeler that aims to help people learn about factors that affect health. It explores the connection between community and health-- how where you live can affect your health; offers guidance on portion control and how to read food labels; and is equipped with a "fat jacket" that simulates what it feels like when your body carries 20 extra pounds. It not only motivates, it offers interactive, hands-on education that can be easily understood by everyone, encouraging lifestyle change.

While CIGNA's Mobile Learning Lab stops at communities across the United States to educate people about their health, it also stops at CIGNA offices to educate employees. Nearly one third of CIGNA's US workforce recently completed CIGNA's Shape Up Challenge, a 10-week program that motivated CIGNA employees to exercise and achieve a healthy weight. Participants lost nearly 20,000 pounds. That's equivalent to 10 tons or two African elephants. They also logged 15.9 million minutes of physical activity, the equivalent of moving and grooving for 30 years.

Take a tour of CIGNA's Mobile Learning Lab with Gary Earl, senior vice president of CIGNA Healthcare, and examine what influences your health by looking beyond fitness and into your community.
