A new law bans smoking in the workplace, much to Bill's dismay. Lisa thinks that Joe saw her and Dave at a movie, but Joe has other reasons for not wanting to talk about it.
The ambulance footage will be seen a few more times and it is always the same footage. Actor Monte Russell, who played the paramedic, has a recurring role on ER as a paramedic.
The network had a problem with the fire sprinklers in the office not being hooked up. They thought that Mr. James would care more about his employees safety, the writers disagreed.
Phil Hartman had just stopped smoking in real life just before the filming of this episode. The story was inspired by the fact that most of the staff of the show smoked.
This episode reveals for the first time Dave's coffee addiction. This addiction will grow through further episodes and it will become one of Dave's defining character traits. It was inspired by Dave Foley's actual large coffee intake, around 4 to 5 pots a day while he was working.
For the scene of the smoky booth at the end of the show, the crew had a hard time sealing the booth being the windows were not actually in the frames due to the fact they took them out for much of the filming. This part was re-shot three different times.
There is a Pacific Bell phone book on the book shelf next to the coffee table. Since the show takes place in New York this is an definite error.
smoking is really cool.
