People will always need civil engineers, even during a recession. Society requires roads, buildings, bridges, toilets, and clean water. Civil engineers provide these items.
On the other hand, fields like Aerospace engineering depend more on government influence and the economy-people don't build $100M satellites and fighter jets if the economy sucks.
