This is a game sample of Valdis Story, which starts at the beginning and goes past the first boss, Gilda.

For Endless Fluff's first game, it is absolutely amazing and very ambitious. Wyatt has a large assortment of skills in his arsenal as well as various weapons and magic. You learn skills as you beat bosses and acquire weapons, and you can do large and complex combos with ground skills, air skills, double jumps, dashes, back dashes, and more.

You can deal more or less damage depending on the time of day too; Angels are hurt more during darker times of the day by dark skills and Demons are hurt more during the day by holy skills. I've heard that the game is pretty hard, but on Godslayer difficulty, the game still seems a bit on the easier side for me. I appreciate that you can't really heal on boss fights or use items; this does add a needed element of challenge. So far, difficulty (on hardest setting) is so-so; not all that hard, but not a complete cakewalk.

While visuals aren't typically much of a necessity for me, I really dig the visuals in this game. It's not ultra flamboyant and it doesn't get you with over-the-top special effects or large sprites; It has more of an aesthetic beauty to...it feels "Okami-ish" (I just use Okami as an example); Okami isn't the greatest looking game on the planet, but it grabs you with its artistry and atmosphere.

The artwork doesn't use a million and one colors, but conveys a unique and semi-monochromatic style that uses limited colors very effectively to fit with the theme of the game. The atmosphere feels somewhat gothic and nothing really looks out of place. The scrolling background and foreground elements are also very well done; particularly in later phases of the game.

Some of the music is somewhat simple in composition, but it is bleak and really fits well with the game. Other tunes are excellent. The only thing that is "Sorta-Kinda Working" is Wyatt's voice; it's too deep and monotonistic. It doesn't take anything away from the game as the action tends to drown him out, but it's just a small nitpick of mine.

The music and sounds are all their own; nothing is really "borrowed" or "recycled" from other games...for me, that is why this game is really a feat; people have grown too comfortable in reusing things and while it's okay to borrow a thing here or there, it's hard to make an indie game and call it your own when you use other people's material... it just lacks some credibility to me. Everything in this game (to my knowledge) is more or less original (sans probably a few sound effects), so it's all good.

You gain experience points (more for higher combos) and the game is broken up into levels/chapters, so it isn't a good idea to try to rush a stage if you want to get the most out of it. You can find hidden items/objects and decide whether to seal certain bosses or kill them...Other than possibly influencing your light or darkness, I don't know what the differences could be. You get "Combat XP" when you level up that you can allocate to stats by save points (you also change weapons and such by save points).

NOTE: This is a demo of a game that is no longer worked on...but it is not forgotten. A redesign of the game known as Valdis Story AC is in the works.
