Siska: Poverty. For Indonesian citizens, its not just a word. More than half of Indonesian people live their entire lives in poverty.
The children also live in poverty. Every day they work in order to provide food for the families they love. Living in the middle of the city makes them tired of thinking about the future. In the city of Jakarta, unfortunately the children cannot reach their dreams. The poor have to bury their dreams. But, not for laughing and smiling.
Dan: Circus is a good tool to work with socially. Its easy to bring happiness to kids and make them smile. Its also easy to bring anywhere. The kids always love watching clowns. They always like to watch circus. So if I want to help children in that way, Circus is good for bringing joy and levity to their lives.
Siska: Believe that all the children are easily amused. Dan Roberts, an American, has spent two years dedicating his work for the poor children of Indonesia.
Dan lived in Indonesia as a teenager. And hes returned to work socially with children in poor areas. Circus is Dans tool to get the kids to smile and laugh. With a red nose and duck feet shoes, Dan tries to attract the childrens attention. With simple attractions performed in front of them, like spinning plates, flower sticks, box juggling, ball and ring juggling and simple acrobatics.
His funny actions create laughter from the kids of the Bintaro Orphanage in Tangerang, Banten. Without fear they all tried the activities that Dan newly introduced to them.
Young Girl: I wanna play with the plates. Can you do it? I can!
Siska: At the end of the evening, the show had to stop and Dan went home.
This morning Dan is repacking his circus equipment. This time he is getting ready to visit a village in Cilicing, North Jakarta. A Texan, 24 years old, hes already visited many schools, hospitals and poor villages like; Rawamangun, Pulo Gadung, Teluk Gong and Cilincing. Dan visits the village of Cilincing weekly. No wonder the kids look so attached to him. But this time, he is not here to perform for them, instead he is here to teach them about the Circus Arts.
Young Boy: Juggling What is juggling? Its when you do this. Can you do it? I try my best. But can you? Yeah, pretty good!
Siska: He is not only teaching them circus technique. Dan also teaches them the value of working together, being brave, to trust and respect others. They learn how to be responsible and build their self-esteem.
Although Cilincing is always wet and smells of fish, Dan Roberts has found is true calling. Equipped with a red nose and duck bill shoes, Dan brings joy and happiness to kids around Jakarta
Dan: I just want to help the kids by bring joy into their lives. Even if its only for one day. I hope that I can do that for them
