The play dead is a common trick with dogs - the most common way is when the dog is just laying flat on its side. When she was very little, she used to sleep in this upside down legs up position. Then, she would do this while we were playing (e.g. in the middle of a belly rub.) - I used the clicker and treats to mark, shape, and reward this behaviour - and then added the verbal queue "Bang".)
