Edmund Spenser's best known work. "Spenser is best known for 'The Faerie Queene,' an epic poem celebrating, through fantastical allegory, the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I." ~WikipediA
He created his own "Spenserian Sonnet" and stanza form which combined both the Petrarchan sonnet and the Shakespearean sonnet. A controversial figure, he nevertheless used the form to perfection in 'The Faerie Queene' and several other works.
This video hopes to open a window and provide a small view of his influence on art throughout the following centuries.

  • Not to be pedantic, but Spenser's stanza form in the Faerie Queene is actually a take on Ariosto's Ottavarima, with 8 lines of iambic pentameter plus the additional 9th line of hexameter, as a kind of nod to the Italian tradition of Epic poetry.

  • @skagandbone1 :) I do awful iambic pentameter, worse hexameter, but I will say this to you.... That's how it works for me anyway, Love— / It's the only way it works, keeping us / Alive; no sentiment, no lies, above / The fray when your board's just a game of chess— / Cowardice, or undressing of a dress. / And then when that cancerous world creeps in— / We enter that world in tears, in distress; / The opening gambit, taking your pawn— / That's how it works for me. Love. Loss. It's always been..

  • I'm related to Edmund Spenser in some way or the other :)

  • I don't even know, on a personal level, an Edmund or a Spenser. :D Thanks for viewing! :)

  • The art is very beautiful. What is the name of the composition?

  • I put the credits at the end of the video. The music was composed by Henry Purcell (1659-1695). It is from his composition: The Fairy Queen, Part 10 Chaconne, performed by the Season Chamber Orchestra. Thanks for commenting.
