Canon 5D mark II light and motion test we did at Mole Richardson. The Camera performed quite well, but cannot be "hand-held."

The Video was recoded to 24P as well.

  • Why do you say 1/60 is the shutter to use??? I heard that shooting with 25 fps you should use 1/50 and when you shoot at 30 fps you should use 1/60. Always double it....? Or am I wrong???

  • @landulf88 You gotta read slower :) that's what I stated. At the time the 5D only shot at 30fps not 24.

  • yea i never really cared about the smear, it can be fixed in post anyway. The camera just takes more work then a $8000 camera, but its give and take really with any cam.

Hmm, I am not sure for PC to be honest. 24P is nice for "filmmaking" but to be honest, if you do it right, anything can look professional and no one will care if its 30p, 29.976 or 24P. If you are having a hard time deciding wait and see if they update the 5D. God knows i am crossing my fingers.

  • What do you mean thee camera can't be handheld? Is it too small so the motion comes out too jerky?

Looks really good though. How do you make sure that the motion of objects doesn't come out to smeary, like waving hands, or camera whip pans. I see this a lot in other videos. Thanks!

  • When I say it can't be hand-held I mean it needs a stabilizer to look professional. The weight is a factor due to it being so light and not ergonomically friendly.

Smeary picture and whips are part of the weakness of the camera and can really only be somewhat alleviated by changing the shutter speed which only helps a little.

Also you may see it more it other videos because people tend to prob shoot at 1/30 shutter speed and not the correct 1/60.

  • oops! accidentally removed your post! Anyways, yea I hope the functions of the 7D get moved to the 5D. As for the sensor size, it's gigantic. Quite larger then the 7D and also bigger then the RED One. I personally would go with the 7D if I had the choice now. Just don't buy EF-S lenses.

  • hey u using a chest mounted steadycam or dyu do that in post?

  • well done man this vid is fuckin sick :)

  • Sweeeet

  • how amny watts that mole richardson in the back?

  • what effects did you use?

  • That was different, in a good way. Quite stylish. It reminded me of the video to smack my bitch up. Another great 5d short

  • I don't mind a little smear, but there are plenty of videos on this site that don't do this camera justice.

If I'm a PC user, what plug-in should I get/or did you use to render out your 24p? Plenty of people complain that it's never the same. I'm really stuck between the 7d and 5d... I keep hearing that one is better for filmmaking, the other, youtube vids only.
