Was doing a water change and everyone kept coming up to say hi. So I figured I'd give some attention once I was done.

  • i think my loaches are sick because of the tap water. what kind of water conditioner / de-chlorinator do you use? help!

  • @PhidippusAudax I use API's stress coat plus. What are your readings for nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia? Is your tank cycled?

  • @Raycoli I'm ashamed to say that I keep them in a bucket. my dad bought them from the grocery store to use as fishing bait but then didn't go fishing, so i've claimed them mine, but can't afford all the necessary aquarium thingys... but now i don't use tap water anymore. i use mountain spring water (our drinking water source ten miles from home), change it every day, and the loaches are okay now after being sick for 3 days (all blackened and upside down before)...

    Oh dear.

If you can, please get a large plastic tupperware like storage bin or search on craigslist for a cheap aquarium. The larger the better. If you can't get a filter right away please continue with the daily waterchanges.

I greatly suggest fishlore.com and its forum for any help you need, especially since you seem to be in an emergency here. They are very kind and knowledgeable and helped me with my set up.

Best of luck to you and your loaches.

  • please tell me what you feed them please!!! (i've been giving them bread crumbs and raw fish, and the water stinks!)

  • If you have access to fish food sold at pet stores, algae wafers, shrimp pellets, frozen bloodworms, anything that will sink will work for them. Don't overfeed, just give what they would eat in a few minutes. And supplement these with "real" food every so often. I usually do once a week.

    Good luck!

  • im definitely gonna get one for my 55 gal now that i know they r so friendly. i love fish like that. one question. my tank has gravel in it. if it had a lot of hiding places would it be ok? or so i need fine gravel and if so would the fine gravel be ok on one side of the tank?

  • ah thank you very much! :) :)

  • You can do raw fish, raw shrimp is also good, just take it out once they're done or after a few minutes. It's also best if you only do any sort of meat the day of a water change.

For veggies mine will eat peas and zucchini. Peel peas before dropping them in and zap the zucchini in a microwave for a few seconds to soften it up. I've also heard of giving them cucumber slices. Take out the food after a few minutes of eating.
