In this video interview, legendary search guru Mike Grehan discusses another way of looking at the linkage of the Internet, a concept that he calls "the Synaptic Web."

A synapse is the point at which a nervous impulse passes from one neuron to another. Gerhan's model relies on the idea of a neural network between neurons, the way the brain is organized.

The synaptic web model describes the relationships between people and how we link together, as opposed to the way that webpages link together. People, especially in the social web, share to form consensus, get opinions, and eventually find solutions together.

The old marketing approach was to broadcast a message. The new marketing begins by listening to the voice of the customer through the social media, to learn from consumers about the demand for a product or service.

Mike Grehan is the Global VP of Content for Incisive Media, and is responsible for content in Search Engine Watch, ClickZ, and the Search Engine Strategies Conference. This interview was recorded at the eMetrics Marketing Optimization Summit in San Jose, CA, in May 2010.
