  • I have to say it as often as I can: Wasilweski is the genius pianist from Poland. He's the best in the world! I've never heard anything like him, and I've been listening to jazz for nearly 60 years - from Bud Powell, Lennie Tristano, Shearing, Jarrett, Tyner. Watching him on Kattorna with Stanko is a revelation.

  • My wife and I sat in the front row at the Jazz Bakery and we saw the most blasting Jazz Trio. These guys have an other world energy. They are the U2 rock group of Jazz!! I hope they get a Grammy nomination for the ECM album January. I hope that ECM records a live cd or video of the group. It would be a shame to not document this group in its early stages. • @tommythomaso : hey Bro, i actually have to disagree just a lil bit. Poland has a great jazz tradition and history, and the polish jazz scene was actually a phenomena during the communism times, absolutely world class players and the scene was definitely the best behind the iron curtain, andI think im not going too far by saying that even one of the best in europe which remains till today, and makes me actually proud :) Ofcourse it didn't really get through the courtain back in the days...

  • @bronislaw There coming out of the woodwork in Poland. It's their newly acquired freedom that bursts out with dazzling talent. Stanko picked up Moby, Kurkiewicz and Miskiewicz from the Polish boondocks to fulfill a contract, and now they're world-class. European jazz is no longer derivative.

  • We've seen Wasilewski live twice. Once with Manu Katché in Amsterdam, once with his own trio in Osnabrück. Very impressive. One of those musicians who are much better live than on record.

  • He can certainly make those damn ivories talk. Fantastic. Love the energy he shows. You can get off on a big trip just watch that shirt and his HIGH energy and you are off to another dimension. :-)))) Thanks for playing for us. WOW-ing to the soul. :-)))

  • Then you have to check out Shai Maestro, who's playing in Avishai Cohen Trio.

    He's a prodigy.

  • one OF them ofcourse

  • well said :-)

be sure to check out other great polish pianists, like Sławek Jaskulke, Joachim Mencel, Leszek Możdrzer,Michał Tokaj, just to mention a few... there are actually many terrific jazz pianists in Poland, and Marcin is definetely one them!

  • - terrific player - reminiscent of the great Andrew Hill but only with more sunshine and just as oblique attack but with rounder angles (?) - "January" is a great record - very tasteful drummer and sensitive bassist - so will ECM allow this trio to foresake the label's impramateur of stark ethereal-'ism' for more 'in-the-trenches' intensity that plays so well in this video?

  • This is wonderful and I've been waiting to get this side of Marcin on CD ever since I saw TSQ in Birmingham a couple of years ago.
