This song was released as a B-Side twice in the 1970's, once as a B-Side for their single "Ripples" (from "A Trick of the Tail"), and again as a B-Side for "Your Own Special Way" (from the "Wind and Wuthering" album). The duration of the track was 5:46 and featured a simple vocal section in the first two minutes of the song, followed by an extended instrumental in the vein of Psychedelic Rock featuring sitar, backwards vocals, and meandering keyboards. The track came to an unfaded ending similar to the opening of the track Mad Man Moon on "A Trick Of The Tail". The track was later scrapped for the album, but still appeared as a reprisal in the last track on "A Trick Of The Tail", Los Endos. Lacking a suitable opening for the studio version of the "Los Endos", part of "It's Yourself" was excerpted to open the studio version of the track. This short section is the only section of "It's Yourself" to have been played live, and only in 1976 as the introduction to "Los Endos".

I'd like to point out to YouTube that this version of the song is out-of-print and is not commercially available and I'm not trying to make money off of this video.

  • Great..one of my fave rare Genesis with Hackett trax and an alternative version to boot!

  • @rpcurtiss I recorded this off of a record that I bought and I always wanted to hear the ending and I was lucky to find this very rare single.

  • Thank you Flashtalk11, I always wondered how the difference sounded, as I have both the Archive 2 and 1976-1982 edits and like you said they're faded out, although the 1976-1982 one has an extra verse. Also, only the Italian single release fo 'Ripples' had 'It's Yourself' on its flip-side and I'm from Italy, so you made twice as happy!

The ending is very nice indeed. Now it'd be nice to have a sort of complete thing with both the extra verse and the ending. Maybe one day...

  • @RadDudeski69 Thanks glad that I made your day.

  • @Flashtalk11 While I'm enjoying this version again, I'd like to ask you how the single version of 'Your Own Special Way' (or 'Ripples', depending on which single you bought) was edited. I have an idea of how it should be but I never heard the actual edits.

  • Whose seen the wind not you or I, But when the ship moves she's passing by. Between you and me I really don't think, She knows where she's going at all. You, you have your own special way, Of carrying me twice round the world Never closer to home than the day, The day I started. You, you have your own special way, Hold onto my hand keep it way 'bove the water, Don't ever let go no, no, no. That is the lyrics that they cut and the keyboard solo as well.

  • @twostikks1 i definitely approve this commanet, please can you send me your email adress or link to the mp3? maybe i have an intersting bootleg in exchange for you? please keep me in touch, thank you :-)

  • @twostikks1 It was probably an executive decision by the record company and being just a b-side to a couple of very minor hits, the band might not have cared too much about it. Or maybe it was a technical reason, as there could only be so much music in the quality of vinyl they chose to print those singles on. Just guessing anyway... Happy New Year to you as well, thanks for your wishes! There's a Facebook page called Duchess that I co-administer, I think you might find it interesting...

  • @RadDudeski69 Yeah, it's perfect! I just can't figure out why the band decided to fade it early when they released it. It's just too bad that the complete version is not in 5.1 Surround (which, btw, sounds very cool ... it just fades early!) Happy New Year!

  • @twostikks1 Thank you for your offer. However, I asked a friend to do the same and he did an excellent job too. Isn't it beautiful to have the complete and unedited version, clocking in at nearly 7 minutes?...

  • @RadDudeski69 LOL ... I have the combined version you're looking for! I had the Italian single (in pristine shape, I might add), and provided this to a friend, who was able to "Splice" the complete ending to the extended version from the 1976-1982 box set. Contact me, I'll send it to you on MP3. (I DEFY you to be able to find the splice, it is undetectable!)

  • @Flashtalk11 Thank you for setting it straight, I do appreciate!

  • Wow!...Thank you very much for this.

  • da fonti accreditate (il libro "Musical Box" di Mario Giammetti , pag 196 ), vengo a sapere che questo brano vide la luce in Italia nel lontano 1976, come retro del 45 giri "Ripples" !!
