This nice little method will allow any PS1 game to be played on any console. This includes games from other regions, burnt/backup copies, etc.

Note: This does NOT require a mod-chipped console. This nifty little trick can be performed on any PS1/PSone console out there. [I've heard you can do it on a PS2 Slim as well.]

What it DOES require, however, is a tiny modification which makes your console think its door is closed when, actually, it is open. I'll be posting a tutorial of this very soon, but for now some Googling will suffice, huh?

Written Method:

1. Insert your official black-bottom PS1 game and switch on the console. It should start spinning normally, and then accelerate to around double its original speed.
2. After a couple of seconds it should slow down. At this point, immediately pull out the legit disc and replace it with your backup, which should start spinning at max speed instantly.
3. The backup will slow down. Again, quickly switch the backup back with legit disc.
4. Now, this is where timing is crucial. Almost instantly, the PlayStation logo on your screen will disappear, you must switch the discs one last time AS SOON AS THIS HAPPENS!

Comment if you get stuck. Happy swapping!

  • just one question... doesn't the playstation startup stop playing abruptly at the first "Sony entertainment" logo if the disc tray is open, then go to the CD and memory stick options? In this video I can clearly hear the PS1 going through the whole boot

  • @TheTechnoToast You can't really see it when the disc is in, but I've carefully modded the console to continue the boot process even when the disc drive is open. It's very technical. Basically there's this little button that is pressed when the lid closes to let the system know it's ready to go. So I've jammed a little piece of paper into the button's hole. Problem solved.

  • this is PlayStation PSX is new

  • @cibojano *claps*

  • For some reason after I do the first switch to the burned disk, wait for the slow down, then swap it for the ps1 disk, it never accelerates to 2x speed and the screen never goes black. Maybe I have a different model playstation?

  • @mbturner625 Seems like a read error. Which forces me to ask the stupid questions like; are you sure the disc is genuine? Is the disc dirty/scratched? It should be slowing down, the PS1 never had a model which read discs differently than another, so there must be something with your disc or system. That said, perhaps try a different genuine disc to swap with or, if possible, a different system! Good luck!

  • O_O silent hill...right?

  • @RonnieRambin Oooh that work work rather nicely, it'd be nice to be able to close it....

  • @LinkBean I used a G guitar string, can close the lid back after too.

  • I CANT DO IT! I'm trying to play FFVII and I think I'm doing it right but when I get to the third swap the PS1 logo wont dissapear. Sometimes it does, and I swap it instantly, but even then it does not boot the game. The wierdest part is that the first time it DID work, but after I pressed X to skip the intro, it gave me a black screen and started beeping every few seconds. Please help, I am VERY frusturated here...

  • @FromTheWordsOf Hey just a quick question. When I play my game (Legend of Spyro) the music gets really messed up. Sometimes it doesn't work right, sometimes it doesn't even play at all. Could this be because of my timing? Maybe I was a little late when I put my disc in or something? Or maybe its a bad burn, but I don't think it is because thats the only problem, even the sound effects are fine and I burned at a fairly low speed. Any help would be great and thanks for the great video!

  • @halo3productions911 All you do is put some toilet paper in where the button it, worked great for me.
