Swedish Crayfish feast!

This ugly thing is what swedes eat in august at the big traditional crayfish feastings.

We call them 'kräfta' which is also the swedish word for cancer, oddly enough.

I had crayfish once when i was a kid. I thought my dad had brought home a box of pets for me to play with. Turns out that crayfish are lousy pets...and it really hurts when they pinch you ;)

actually it's english "crayfish" name that's odd, because, I think, it is the only language in which cancer and crayfish are described with different words. Etymology of the sickness' name, is that Hippocrates, describing tumors, noted it's shapes similarities to crabs and he called them like that. And "cancer" is a latin term meaning generally crayfishes and crabs, yet pattern for translating from latin to national languages constituted to be the meaning of a crayfish rather than a crab.

Love your honesty and intelligent answers. They eat these in Louisianna (New Orleans), called crawfish boils. Put in a big pot with corn, carrots, potatoes, and lots of hot sauce. I ate this a few times, really good but extremely hot. They called the yucky stuff ruo and some people spread this in bread or just suck it out (not me).
