Arturo Delmoni, accompanied by Steve Martorella, in the Auditorium of the Third Meeting House (1774-1775) of the First Baptist Church in America, playing Nathan Milstein's (one of Delmoni's teachers) transcription of Chopin's C-sharp minor Nocturne. (The violin is muted.) Rehearsal for Arturo Delmoni's recital May 23, 2010. Steinway piano, violin J.B. Guadagnini (1780). The intro and outro chat audio are from the Canon camcorder, but the music is synched up from the 24/96 audio recording made with Pearl Microfon (Sweden) CC 22 cardioid condenser microphones (ORTF array) and a Sound Devices 702 CF recorder. Audio, video, and editing by John Marks.

  • The sound is good but I think there is some background noise of a spinning hard drive or tape or some sort...I think the mics are near something which is making that noise? Best to put the mics away from any mechanical devices to prevent this entering the recording..

  • @SimonCU I believe that that was a weed whacker being used across the street. Not much can be done about recording in the middle of a city on a Saturday afternoon in May!

John, I read your As-we-see-it article in the December '10 issue of Stereophile with interest. If I understand correctly, you "synced [this video] up to 24-bit/96kHz-derived high-resolution sound". Two questions:

    1) How would that matter once you are compressing it into YouTube sound - beyond the obvious fact that you didn't just record from a camcorder's sound?.

    2) Would it be possible to choose lower-bandwidth video and higher audio in YouTube's future? (FLAC sound??) Thanks!

    Gabe
