Conformity

I argue that Democracy, Monotheism and the concept of progress intrinsically tend toward conformity. Then I ask the question of whether or not conformity is to be avoided, bringing the individual vs. group concept into the picture.

hello. here's one possibility: perhaps these things are inherent in human nature- ie conformity and the idea of one truth. however i would agree there is something discordant going on in modern times. perhaps the real problem is globalisation. so whereas in the good ole days all you would have to conform to is a few dozen people who form your local community, now the conformit is often to national/international rules. hence the bizarre situation you mention in the republican party.

In MAN AND SUPERMAN George Bernard Shaw presents the view that humans have a tendency (and willingness) to submit to each other like no other creatures have, but what really strikes me about that play is the protest against the mistaking of timidity for virtue. You see that today quite a bit. People, particularly conservative people like timidity because it often leads to conformity.
