Mr. Carmeni began judo at the age of 15 in Italy. In addition to his 7 Italian National Championship Titles, he represented Italy in the first judo event in the Olympics in 1964. He has written multiple books on teaching children, pedagogy and psychology of judo, the culture of judo, kata, and sensory disabilities and their integration through the practice of judo. His texts are translated into into many different languages and quoted throughout the world. He is the current Chairman of the IBSA (International Blind Sports Association) Judo Subcommittee. In 2003, he was awarded the prestigious Gold Star medal, an award is granted by the Italian Olympic Committee in recognition of his life devoted to judo and judo for the blind. This is the highest honor conferred on coaches, managers and administrators by the committee. Mr. Carmeni been instrumental in the development and consolidation of blind judo as one of IBSA's strongest sports. He has seen blind judo for men become a part of the Paralympic program in Seoul (1988) and for women in Athens (2004). Mr. Carmeni has been a technical delegate for every Olympics since 1988. He currently holds a rank of hachidan (8th degree black belt) and most recently competed at the World Masters in 2006 where he won a silver medal.
