Tchaikovsky's opera "Mazeppa," set in 18th-century Ukraine, concerns the exploits of the anti-hero Cossack of the title and his love for his godchild Maria. She in turn is loved by her childhood sweetheart, Andrei. We hear first the Introduction to the opera, played by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under Janos Furst. Then we go straight to the last few moments of the final Act, where Maria sings a lullaby to the dying Andrei who had been shot by Mazeppa following The Battle of Poltava. This aria is sung by Ghena Dimitrova, with the Hungarian State Orchestra conducted by Zoltan Pesko.
