President Francois Hollande has hailed France's military intervention in Mali as a success. French troops have aided the Malian army in making big advances against Islamist insurgents - but the victory may not be as clear cut as it seems.

We did not "assist" the French in Vietnam to defend their former colony, that's a ridiculous statement. The French pulled out of there in 1954 realizing it was a lost cause. Large scale American involvement began in 1961, and it was an anti-communist campaign versus the FrENCH goal which was colonization. Some great battles were won by the French: Verdun, The Marne, and Algeria come to mind. From The Encyclopedia of Military History: French: 108 wins, lost 48 and 10 "draws".
