As a volunteer Captain who has driven hook and ladders code 3 for almost 20 years, I can tell you that it never stops being white-knuckle time. Not because of the size of the equipment, but due to the unpredictability of the other drivers. Every year brings a new generation of drivers who freak at the sound of a siren and air horns, they are the ones that will get you killed.
