  • Looks like they saved him from himself. Lots of folks go through intensely painful times like this. I found it hopeful that his family and neighbors all came out and displayed their humanity.

    I think the tie symbolizes the falsehood of being on top: he is forced to act bigger than he really is . . . and eventually it leads to his demise (as he hangs himself with it). He is also force to carry around another burden in the stool for the tie to be even functional (i.e. so it doesn't hit the ground).
