I'm sure the Viking and the Mongal leaders who recruited others thought their brave soldiers who did the killing we're patriotic/dedicated as well! If you follow people in senseless agression and domination your responsible for the acts that are the result! The American Government took the whole of the country from the Indians but it was The troops that did the enforcing of policies! The idea of obeying "nations" or leaders creates war!

    Because here, Ron Kovic had reached a breaking point due to the effects of the war and the realization that not only was the war invalid, but because he earlier, like most people, were led to believe that it was necessary in order to win over the evil empire (in essence lied to). But the news media (Cronkite, in particular) caught up with the lie, the misleadings, and the sentiments then turned against the war. This climactic scene captures that compellingly. And this scene is the turning point.
