In Band of Brothers, the flower, Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), was a rare flower that can only be found/grows in rugged terrain, generally above the tree line... in a certain mountain . Only those who are "man" and brave enough can reach the top of the mountain, retrieve the flower and get down. It was even the mark of a "true soldier."

Is this actually true? I know the Edelweiss is the sign of the German mountain divisions but did german soldiers actually climb mountains to get this flower?
