Stanford (1852-1924), friend of Brahms, and respected Irish teacher and composer, is not well known for his piano music, which is however worth investigating. This beautiful piece looks back to the 'Warblings at Eve' - type of bird imitations in salon music, but forward to Messiaen in its evocation of birdsong over a slow-moving musical background.
