My Mystery Box submission for the Geekdad contest:
I saw this competition and instantly knew I had a submission. I had made Mystery Boxes years ago in a previous life as a metalsmith (now I make interactive simulator attractions). I sent the contest a photo of the set from a scanned slide (film!) when I first made them. The video shows the aged patina of them after years of handling and shaking. And still nobody knows what's inside them!
The Story.
At the time I made these, I was obsessed with house imagery and the Platonic ideal of "House/Home". Of course Lego defined the dimensions. I made sketches studying the dimensions and proportions of the Lego house. One sketch is made by using the Lego house as a stamp. I made many house objects over the years. These are just a sampling.
I made them out of bronze sheet in various sizes. Then, in the middle of the night with no witnesses, I filled them with various and sundry items known only to me. I didn't call them Mystery Boxes but "Shaker Homes." They are meant to be shaken, they are homes, they make sounds and are meant to evoke a response from the shaker. Toys, musical or noise instruments.
I've never told anyone what's inside them, including my wife of almost 20 years. She saw them the day they were finished and asked what was inside them. Much to her frustration and despite her threats, I've never told and I have the pleasure now over a decade later of having forgotten most of it myself and so even for me the maker they are now mystery boxes.
This video that shows a progression from the humble Lego originals through silver castings with semi-precious stones and the full set of Shaker Homes. Shaken, not stirred.
