Recorded live at the Alpine Valley Ampitheater in East Troy, Wisconsin on July 3, 1979. This was from an AM mono radio broadcast . The CD is entitled MONOLITH IN THE STORM because while the show was being broadcast there was a thunderstorm that affected it's quality. This was on the MONOLITH tour. Thanks to You-Tube user Belexes for the corrections.

The song was written by Steve Walsh, Robby Steinhardt and Rich Williams and appears on the MONOLITH album.

I apologize because the source file cuts off abruptly.

Steve Walsh - Vocals, Keyboards
Kerry Livgren - Keyboards, Guitars
Robby Steinhardt - Vocals, Violin
Rich Williams - Guitars
Dave Hope - Bass
Phil Ehart - Drums

  • The tape finishes too early! but the last 45 seconds are blast. Wish I could hear the end of it.

I saw them in 1980 at Budokan. Been a great influence ever since...

    Thanks Rick!

  • Sorry about the abrupt cut-off but that's the way the recording of this show came. I wish I could hear the end of it also!

So you were at the Jan.16,1980 show in Tokyo? Must have been cool. I have a recording of that show as well. It's an audience recording that sounds like the guy(or gal) who did it was way up in the nose bleed seats. Still they played a nice long set and sounded like they were in fine form.

It was the last show of the Monolith tour!

  • Hey Rick. Off course I didn't mean to complain! This particular song is the least fav of the album, but this version is much better.

Yes the date is Jan.16, 1980. So that was 30 years ago! Then I moved to LA and saw them many times including VC tour with Elephante and 7 man line-up with Livgren (the first time I saw Rags).

Then I came back home to Tokyo and Kansas literally followed me! They came to play in Kawasaki ,Dec.1996, 2 months after I came back..

  • Not a bad band to follow you around! I saw them in 1996. They opened for Styx here in Maryland. These guys were smokin' hot on this tour!

  • Steve, Steve, Steve, Kerry, Steve, Robbie, Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve Steve Steve...

    Enough about Steve already!!!

Seriously, not much talk about Phil in many of these threads; he was what I really focused on when I first started listening to this band as a young teen in the early 70's.

The man always comes well-rehearsed & ready to jam. He was the backbone for the rhythmic grooves & complexities that made Kansas so great.

What a tight fucking drummer he is live!

    Phil, Phil, Phil :D

  • Amen Jon! I'm a drummer and when I played in bands the drummer was largely ignored and the lead singer always got the girls! The problem with this band is it has so much to offer with the incredible Walsh and the rest of the guys. All the players are deserving of much more attention and credit! Phil has a very unique style and was perfect for Walsh and Livgrens songwriting! Phil! Phil! Phil!.....Rick

  • @JonP1961 Absolutely. Phil is a kick-ass drummer. And he's really fun to play bass to. He also has a very unique style. Always came up with the unexpected.

  • @nikki00matsumoto

I saw this show at Alpine Valley in the summer of 79. Still have the pictures from the front row.

  • Yeah, Steve can sing his ass of. All of the band members are talented, Dave and Rich got the least love. BG is a good basist but he cant hold DH jockstrap. Rich has gotten much better as a musicain. In fact he is the ONLY one that has played in every KANSAS III caoncert. This 79 tour blows away the AV tour, and the songs Walsh wrote for AV are pretty weak overall. He is the first to admit it. Too bad "Backdoor" was never played live. Walsh would've nailed it

  • In case it wasn't blatantly obvious, that was all in good humor ;)

    Steve is great.
