BHAGAMANDALA (KODAGU District): The Cauvery river gradually began rising on Wednesday owing to good rainfall in the catchment areas in Kodagu district in the past 24 hours. Shantalli in Somwarpet taluk recorded 164.40 mm of rainfall, followed by Bhagamandala with 158 mm in 24 hours till 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
At least 3 ft of water flowed over the Bhagamandala-Aiyyangeri road. Vast areas of paddy fields, most of them uncultivated, in and around Bhagamandala have been inundated. The Talacauvery and Bhagamandala areas received sustained rainfall on Wednesday. Poor monsoon had farmers worried and the steady increase in rainfall has brought cheer. Home Guards are ready to tackle emergencies at Bhagamandala. A mechanised boat has been kept ready for use in case of floods. Water in the Sangam area, which is the confluence of the Cauvery, the Kannike and the Sujyoti rivers, has risen, inundating the head tonsuring area and the footbridge connecting the vehicle parking area and the changing rooms located on the other side of the river.
There were only a few visitors to Bhagamandala. Police personnel have been deployed in the area. Local people waded through the waters on the Madikeri-Bhagamandala road to get to the other side.
Kodagu district received an average of 80.69 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Total rainfall received from January to July 27 this year by the district is 1,068.30 mm against 1,719.83 mm received in the same period last year.
Total rainfall received in Madikeri taluk during this year, from January to July 27, is 1,512.92 mm against 2,273.01 mm recorded in the corresponding period last year. Virajpet taluk has recorded 924.84 mm this year (1,721.14 mm) while Somwarpet taluk has received a total of 767.17 mm (1,165.25 mm).
Napoklu town received 105.20 mm, Sampaje 94.20 mm, Srimangala 86.20 mm, Ammathi 80.20 mm, Madikeri city 76.60 mm, Kodlipet 66.20 mm, Shanivarasante 63 mm, Virajpet town 54.40 mm, Sunticoppa 53.10 mm, Hudikeri and Ponnampet 50 mm each, Balele 40 mm in the last 24 hours. Chill conditions accompanied by breeze prevailed in and around Madikeri with most of the day being foggy.
Harangi reservoir level on Wednesday stood at 2,850.77 ft against its maximum of 2,859 ft. The level in the corresponding period last year was 2,858.64 ft. Inflow was measured at 6,302 cusecs.
Brief visit
Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwatha Narayana Gowda visited the Kutta-Srimangala road works in Virajpet taluk being taken up with the calamity relief funds on Wednesday. He also visited the recently opened Makutta road and instructed the PWD officials to take steps to remove the debris on the road caused due to landslips to make way for smooth traffic.
Executive Engineer (Rehabilitation) of the Harangi Reservoir Doddasiddaiah, on Wednesday, appealed to the people living in the low-lying areas of the river to move to safer places as water could be released from the reservoir into the river any moment in view of the continuous rainfall.
