Roy Haynes Quartet, Geen Chimneys, live in Paris, Duc des Lombards. 25/11/2008.

This theme from Thelonious Monk is one of my favorites. It's amazing to think that Roy played with Monk.


I was sitting next to Roy Haynes for the second set of this evening with his quartet at the Duc des Lombards. Here are some extracts: you can really what he's playing...
Roy is 84 and is one of the best jazz drummers of all time. He played with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Roland Kirk, Art Pepper, Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Kenny Barron, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Bud Powell,Michel Petrucciani, Danilo Perrez,Jack Dejohnette, etc. As a natural drummer, nobody plays like him and nobody is able to.
hese concert was as usual awsome: what a swing ! what a joy ! And the young musicians playing with him, Jaleel Shaw (sax), Martin Bejerano(piano), David Wong (bass) are really great in particular the pianist.

Don't hesitate and go to see him live ! And the Duc des lombards is a really nice and cool jazz club in Paris.


J'étais assis juste à côté de Roy Haynes pour ce second set au Duc des Lombards. Voici quelques extraits, vous povez vraiment le voir jouer.
Roy a 84 ans et c'est un des plus grands batteurs et musiciens de l'histoire du jazz. Il anotamment joué avec toutes les personnes citées plus haut.
C'est un batteur naturel, il n'a pas suivi de cours et personne ne sait et ne peut jouer comme lui. Ce concert était comme d'habitude formidable, quel swing ! quel joie de jouer ! 3 heures de concert ! Les jeunes musiciens de son quartet étaient aussi très bons, en particulier le pianist.
N'hésitez pas à aller le voir en concert. Et le Duc des Lombards est un des meilleurs clubs de jazz de Paris.

roy is such an original, and such an amazing listener!!! His recording with Coltrane in Newport '63, is probably my favorite coltrane album, and no disrespect to Elvin, but Roy's presence on that album added an amazing element..he's probably my favorite all time drummer

Green Chimneys RTC in Brewster, NY is nothing but an abuse center. I was abused there every day and even sexual too. In May 2001 the local paper had an article about 3 older Green Chimneys boys who raped a boy who was only 8. I read on line about Philip Zagarella and Eric Napoletano who were rapists who grew up serial killers too. Green Chimneys corrupts character like in their case.

I watched him live @ Mexico City probably 10 years ago with Patitucci and Michel Camilo... just amaizing. You have to watch him live to admire how he manages the tempo of the whole show, he knows where he is going miles ahead, just amazing!!!

Go t agree with the Newport 63 comment.

I know Elvin Jones was a true Master - a genius - but maybe just a bit too clever for me to keep up. I sometimes find his stuff difficult to relate to.

I 'get' Roy Haynes' playing.

He got amazing drive! Looks about 50, too ;-)

Yesss, Roy Haynes! I have always liked his style.

Question.......why don't they ever show the drummers feet and hands? The same for musicians as a whole? Why can't they show feet,hands, fingers, the beauty of these appendagws at work?!
