Serious rioting broke out on Monday 20th of June 2011 on the lower Newtownards road between loyalists and Nationalists from the short strand area. rioting continued for a second night on the 21st when shots were fired by either the uvf paramilitaries or dissident republican real IRA. A jouralist was shot in the leg but did not suffer life threatening injuries. By Wednesday June 22nd calm seemed to have returned to the area after a deal was struck for the PSNI to stay out of the area but remain close by on stand by. This seemed to have defused tensions. In the video you can see the lines of police armoured landrovers waiting for the go ahead should any trouble flare up.
