Diana Stephens at Pensacola Beach, July 24. The beaches look deceptively cleaner. Most importantly, I saw quite a few feeder fish, flounder, MANY crabs every couple of feet, and lots of birds. Only saw very tiny tar balls in some areas in the surf. Most of the 2 miles I walked was free of big tar balls. The sand did have tiny tar beneath, but I dug down around 1 ft and had difficulty locating large chunks. UWF independent water testing has shown no detectable oil in three counties for over a week despite this. They are not testing for Corexit though so the water could still be toxic. I am not saying the water is safe, but I am seeing more wildlife which is a good sign. Fort Pickens, July 24.
