[June 2007] Last Great Wilderness Part 3 - The damp depressing 'Loch of the Showers' and the equally damp depressing Lochivraon Cottage now take on a huge significance as the realisation dawns on hillwalkers that this access corridor is yet another gateway into the Last Great Wilderness of Scotland. The Loch was threatened during the 1990s with enlargement by a hydroelectric scheme that presumably would have lost this gateway to the Wilderness and conceivably the popular access to the Fannaichs. Weather conditions inevitably make the lochside boathouse and ruins here all the more rather atmospheric. Already host to numerous Munros, a Corbett and 2 Grahams the Loch a'Bhraoin route provides the access to pick off some more peaks of the Big Six. We recced this Cottage beneath the Corbett a few years earlier and immediately wrote off any thoughts of ever staying there. But needs must eh? Brolly-man Nicholas Crane in his 'Great Journeys' TV prog following the 'Pennant' route continued beneath the Munros Sgurr Ban and Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair before reaching a small cairn on the path that during our trek denoted the way back to the bothy. If you watched that programme you will certainly recognise the views in this video that also captures those two Munro summits plus the Munro Beinn Tarsuinn. The views from Beinn Tarsuinn particularly overlooking 'the Table' as well as this entire Last Wilderness are memorable.

  • does anybody know what the second music track is on this video? its brill. please tell me someone,

  • 'My Friend the Sun' - by FAMILY (Roger Chapman on vocals).

  • I was up there last november, and the house was being renovated. According to ther polish chap I spoke to,the "old byre" out the back has been made into a proper bothy, for hillwalkers, while the house is being renovated for use by the estate. I was saddened by the state of the old house too, why trek 3 miles from the main road, just to smash up plasterboard and write graffitti on the ceiling????

  • We slept downstairs in the house as it was like a house of horrors upstairs! Looked in that byre round the back but it looked as if it had been used for slaughtering. Agree, its a shame some folk show contempt and do further damage in these places while they're there.

  • only thing that spoiled this was the graffiti in the bothy. Must be a southern scotland one?

pics of the hills etc were super,

  • Off the A832 road a path leads to Lochivraon Cottage at the foot of Loch a'Bhraoin; the initial part of the walk is the popular access to the Fannaichs. Certainly wouldn't recommend this bothy to anyone; better to head back to the hostel at Ullapool beside the FBI and other pubs!

  • Nice video, for the record, the house is NOT a bothy, its just been used as one for years. It was a keepers house originally, then later the shepherds used it during the summer, but after the door got kicked in for the 1000th time, they just let anyone use it.
