Funeral Saturday for Murdered Akron Baby (AP) -- Doctors told Crystal Wilson that her nearly 3-month-old son would not regain brain function and could not survive on his own without a feeding tube.
She decided to allow removal of life support, and within hours the baby died in her arms Tuesday night. The next morning, the baby's father pleaded not guilty to murder, a charge accusing him of causing the baby's fractured skull and severe bleeding in the brain.
Police said the baby, Camryn Jakeb Wilson, was in his father's care in the family's Cuyahoga Falls home when the injuries occurred.
Family members said they support the decision by the 26-year-old mother to take the baby off life support.
"I am proud of her for thinking of him above herself," said Laura Twiddy, Crystal's mother and the baby's grandmother. She said the baby also had other injuries, including broken ribs.
Crystal, who works at an animal clinic, held her child as he died and family members held hands and prayed.
"She consulted both sides of the family and we all agreed that it is not a life we would want for him," Twiddy said. "She consulted both sides of the family and we all agreed that it is not a life we would want for him," Twiddy said.
An autopsy by the Summit County medical examiner's office lists the cause and manner of the baby's death as pending. The office is still working on laboratory tests and reviewing records.
The baby's father, Craig Wilson, 28, had been arrested on an assault charge after the baby was taken to the hospital March 12 with head and body injuries.
Craig Wilson's lawyer, Jon Sinn, said his client was given permission to leave Summit County Jail on Friday and visit his son's body at a funeral home, escorted by sheriff's deputies. The boy's funeral was scheduled for Saturday.
Wilson, a machinist, plans to cooperate fully with prosecutors and police and was devastated by Camyrn's death, Sinn said.
Sinn said Wilson has "a desire to bring closure to this situation for the family as quickly as possible and to that end we are working toward a resolution. This is a young man who has taken responsibility for his actions."
The family used a Web page to post updates after the baby was hospitalized. The site says Camryn was a victim of shaken baby syndrome.
On March 20, the site said "parts in Camryn's brain that control awareness are dead" and that any movements were involuntary.
memorial donations may be made to any First Merit Bank in Camryn's name or to Cox Funeral Home in Crystal Wilson's name to defray expenses. (COX WADSWORTH, 330-335-3311)
@Kitsune1414- okay moron, let me break it down for ya- The reason why people treat babies like "gods" and not like "sacks of shit like the rest of us", is actually simple common sense. Babies are born into the world helpless and defenseless, therefore they cannot stave off an attacker. Also, they've had no time on this earth to commit any wrong, so they are innocent souls. Lastly, if you parent a child, it's a part of you, and normally you wouldn't want it dead. Clear enough for ya?
