Singel Red Light District Amsterdam

Singelgebied is the name of the second largest red light district in Amsterdam. It lies next to the Singel canal and is far less glitzy than the main area though not as quiet as the tiny De Pijp area in the south.

Hi George, great video.

How were you able to film without any problems, as I believe the girls are not keen on their workplace being filmed - did you do it in the early morning?

As a lady myself, I am very fascinated by the RLD, but of course it is not appreciated that I should peer in the windows! However, when I am in the RLD I try to get as good a look as possible, without making it obvious, but I would love to have a close-up look.

@mi1964amigo @mi1964amigo Thanks. I do film fairly early in the morning though there are still usually a few girls around. I sometimes have to film segments at different times and edit them together. On my website I have photos of every red light window in Amsterdam and that took me a lot of separate visits.

I respect the girls and would never show their faces on the net. Many have families who don't know they are working there.

@mi1964amigo Some of the girls will see female clients so you could always make out you are interested and approach one. Just ask "Do you see ladies and how much would it be?" BTW They are used to tourists looking at them and usually only get annoyed if someone just stands and stares for a long time without moving on.

A few months ago in London I saw an exhibition of Ed and Nancy Kienholz's installation 'The Hoerengracht' - very, very interesting.
