Johann Sebastian Bach: Sarabande from Cello Suite No.6 in D major (BWV1012) transcribed for piano in 1932 by George Herbert Fryer (1877-1957), played by British virtuoso Jonathan Plowright.

This was recorded live during Jonathan Plowrights recital at the Wigmore Hall, London on Saturday 15th November 2008.

The English pianist and pedagogue Herbert Fryer had a life-long association with the Royal Academy of Music in London, and his career as a concert performer from the age of 21 took him all over the world. Fryer composed a number of original pieces for piano, as well of transcriptions of songs and hymns including transcriptions of works by J.S.Bach.

Jonathan Plowright has recently recorded for Hyperion a set of English transcriptions of J.S.Bach by composers including Herbert Fryer. This recording will be available during 2010.

  • Does anyone know how to find these transpositions by George Herbert Fryer?

  • Wonderful playing! But I don't like the transcription. The extra notes are unecessary and take away from the pureness and beauty of the original.

  • Very nice transcription and well played!
