Attacks on Theatre in Hungary

The tilt to the right in Hungarian politics has also taken its toll on the country's cultural institutions. Now, the New Theatre in Budapest is planning to ban all non-Hungarian playwrights from its program. Budapest's mayor has appointed two new theatre directors: a right-wing nationalist and an anti-Semite. The move triggered widespread outrage in Hungary's arts scene, but that hasn't deterred one of the new theatre directors, György Dörner. He even wants to rename the performance hall. His is an open challenge to the theatre establishment.
